The Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course is designed to reinforce and enhance your skills in the treatment of pediatric arrest and peri arrest patients through active participation in a series of simulated pediatric emergencies.  These simulations are designed to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

The goal of the PALS Course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes.

PALS Provider Course is designed for healthcare providers who initiate and direct basic through advance life support.  Course concepts are designed to be used throughout the stabilization and transport phases for both in-hospital and out-of-hospital pediatric emergencies.  In this course you will enhance your skills in the evaluation and management of an infant or child with respiratory compromise, circulatory compromise, or cardiac arrest. 

With this course you will receive a PALS Provider Manual. 

Prior to taking this course the following must be met: 

  1. You must have a current BLS Provider Card.
  2. Complete the pre-course checklist contained in your PALS Provider Manual.
  3. Review the course agenda and note course activities where you might need to supplement your knowledge before attending the class.
  4. Be prepared to pass the Child CPR and AED Skills Testing Checklist and Infant CPR Skills Testing Checklist. The resuscitation scenarios require that your BLS skills and knowledge are current.  Review and understand all 2015 BLS guidelines, especially as they relate to pediatric patients. 
  5. Review and understand the information in your PALS Provider Manual and on the Student Website. Paying attention to the systematic approach to pediatric assessment, the evaluate-identify-intervene sequence, and the management of respiratory and circulatory abnormalities.
  6. Review, understand, and complete the Pre-Course Self-Assessment (mandatory) on the Student Website (heart.org/eccstudent). You will find the code to access the Student Website in the beginning of the PALS Provider Manual.  This test consists of 3 sections:  ECG rhythm identification, pharmacology, and practical application.  Use this assessment to identify areas where you need to increase your knowledge.  A passing score of 70% or above is required for the Pre-Course Self-Assessment.
  7. Be familiar with the PALS algorithms and flowcharts so that you can apply them to clinical scenarios. Note that the PALS Provider Course does not present the detail of each algorithm. 

What This Course Does Not Cover

The PALS Provider Course does not teach you how to use an AED, CPR, ECG rhythm identification, PALS pharmacology, or algorithms.   If you do not review CPR and if you do not learn and understand the ECG and pharmacology information in the Pre-Course Self-Assessment, it is unlikely that you can successfully complete the PALS Provider Course.  You will not be taught how to read or interpret ECG rhythm strips in the course, nor will you be taught details about PALS pharmacology.

Payment in full is required at the time of initial registration to reserve a place in the class.

 

Cancellation and Refund Information 

Cancellations must be requested by the student and submitted in writing. 

If you are more than 7 minutes late without notification, you will need to reschedule.

There is a 10% fee charged on all class cancellations. 

There is no refund for cancellations less than 10 days prior to the class start date. 

There is no refund for opened course materials.  There is a 10% restocking fee on returned books.  Any unopened materials must be returned within 7 business days of cancellation to be eligible for a refund.

If Southern Region cancels the class a full refund will be issued (less any applicable course materials). 

There are no fees incurred if the class is rescheduled for another date.

Southern Region EMS Council reserves the right to cancel a class if enrollment is less than the course minimum. A full refund will be issued less the cost of any opened course books.

There is a 10% fee on all cancellations. There is no refund for registrations cancelled within 7 days of class start date.

To receive a refund on UNOPENED course books they must be returned within 7 business days from cancellation.

If cancelled before Heartcode Complete license is issued, there will be a 10% cancellation fee. If Heartcode Complete license has been issued no refund will be given.

All cancellation requests must be in writing from the student enrolled in the course and submitted to registration@sremsc.org with a subject title of "STUDENT CANCELLATION".
